WFH: 5 Ways to Find the Balance

9 months into the pandemic: how have you been lately? Recovered and found a way to internalise it? Or are you still struggling to adapt with this long, never-ending change and waiting for it to end? I’m guessing most of us have. Consciously or subconsciously. Even if we hadn’t, the world pretty much has and has brought along a wave of changes with it, that we all are forced to adapt to. Work from home is one of those.

Work from home

Freelancing has been around since quite a while now, but it had always been a rare, unconventional practice, often reserved for the older, richer, sector of the demographic. I remember 18 year old, passionate and experience hungry me, scouting the nooks and crannies of advertising agencies, or crashing the personal space of HR Executives and begging them for a work from home internship, while I balance my college life side by side. It was very usual in that case to be kicked out with a raucous peal of laughter.

Now, however, we’d probably be the ones laughing at our own past, as we all adapt into the harsh repercussions of working from home and find our own space to let the reality sink in. While some of us have done it really well and are enjoying in our individual work corners, many of us just can’t find a way to manage the umpteen number of tasks that we have. If you are the former, that’s simply great. I’m proud of you. However, if you are one of those who gets easily flustered about the smallest life changes, here are a few thought starters to help you cut ties with the hassles of everyday life.

working from home

  1. Time Yourself: Working from home can make us more distracted than we think it will. Sure, you don’t have office colleagues to fool around with, but there are so many other things that might! The list is endless. So before you get lost in just ‘one more episode’ or take another half an hour long mid-day nap, get your to do list for the day, ready. Set up proper timelines and make sure you adhere to them. Not only will this help you, but will definitely benefit your bosses and the colleagues whom you’ve got to report to.time yourself
  2. Create a Connection: What often helps along with timing yourself adequately is creating a workplace connection to be accountable to. Get talking with a workplace buddy. Since they are one of those who might be awaiting the work you send in, this would be perfect. Sit with them in the beginning of the day and go over your daily task list, come up with a timeline that suits both of you and be answerable to them. Research always proves that having an immediate boss or a buddy to be answerable to, boosts productivity and amplifies results like anything! So go, get connecting!workplace buddy
  3. Bump Up Those Speakers! Other than Netflix and intermittent naps one of the things I absolutely lurveee about WFH is the peace within the chaos. Since there’s absolutely no one to share a desk with, get those speakers connected, tune into your favourite playlist, and let the vibe sink in! Being a writer who is constantly brainstorming, ideating and creating, I always found the idea of listening to music while working ridiculous. I mean I don’t need another distraction here! I need something to focus! A nice, cool, calming playlist, perfectly does the job. My favourite is Indie Music, intrumental piano mixes or some nice feelgood Bollywood or Kollywood playlists: ahh, so soothing.bump up the speakers
  4. Don’t Technically ‘Work From Home’: I know, this may found a bit too much of a stretch, but this indeed is possible. Enjoy that breezy verdant park you go for a run to every morning? I’m sure the tree there has a perfect spot for you to plug into. Your favourite cafe recently opened up? I’m sure they’re eagerly awaiting some customers. I’m not saying that you go at the risk of your own safety. You don’t even have to spend whole days there. Just go for a few hours, and make sure you follow all the 38393 safety protocols you need to. This is totally up to you! Even workcationing is a common trend that is coming up these days. Earlier taking a leave meant not attending office, hence not working. Now you can literally travel the world, live in the most luxurious of places, and yet hustle hard at what you love. I can’t think of a better situation. Tell me if you have one.work from anywhere
  5. Seize the Day: Got a whole bunch of things to do one your list today, but craving that afternoon nap? Don’t do it. Got some time off from work and went off doing laundry? That can wait. I know you’re going to say that doing laundry is totally okay if you don’t have anything to deliver today, but what about tomorrow? What about the meeting that you’ve got to prepare for the next week? What about the blog post you’ve been postponing for more than a month now (lol)? Huh? What about those? We know as soon as the day starts that okay, there’s not much to do today, I’ve got this and I can spend the rest of the day procrastinating and I’ll probably take this up later. My advice? Seize the day. People say that there’s no tomorrow. I say that even our next minute, maybe even the next second of our life is uncertain. So take it up today. Do your most important tasks first. The chores can wait. Do what matters first.seize the day

Many of us have moved on from the work from home phase, but for those who haven’t, here’s your chance to take matters into your hands and make the best out of this! Hope this helps you when you start off work next. Until then, cheers and good luck!
